PRA is a genetic-based condition of the eyes
that is, unfortunately, very prevalent in English
Springer Spaniels.
Dogs are classed as NORMAL, CARRIER, or AFFECTED.
From University of Missouri - College of Veterinary Medicine:
"NORMAL dogs will not develop this form of PRA, and
can safely be bred to a dog with any test result.
CARRIERS are highly unlikely to develop this form of PRA.
They should be used carefully in breeding programs,
to keep their good qualities while reducing risk
of PRA in future generations.
AFFECTED dogs are at risk for developing PRA at some
point in their lifetime. At this time we do not have
a way to predict when clinical symptoms may appear, or
how severe the visual impairment may be. Additional
research is underway to help determine these details."
A more in-depth discussion of PRA can be found at
www.CanineGeneticDiseases.net.
Based on the sire and dam, we know what the
genetic condition of the pups will be.
The fact that all pups in this litter will be classed
as carrier is actually relatively good.
PRA is an important issue in Springers.
Please ask Dayna to explain more about it.
